Man throws £10,000 Rolex onto Subway roof to stop being mugged
A man threw his Rolex watch onto the roof of a fast food restaurant to stop it being taken by a knifeman.
The dramatic moment Mark Ewart flung his watch on top of Subway rather than hand it over was caught on video.
The 57-year-old was leaving his Apple Flooring business in Basildon, Essex, on Monday when he was cornered by the robber, who was armed with a foot-long blade.
But Mr Ewart was determined not to give up his luxury watch and tossed it onto the roof of the sandwich shop.
The move left the robber ‘perplexed’ and he made off with the dad-of-two’s laptop instead.
Mr Ewart was unharmed and he later collected his watch, which still works.
He said: ‘I’m shaken up, I’m angry, I feel violated – all of the above and more.
‘What I did was either brave or stupid, I just don’t know.
‘The thing is I’m 6ft 6in and 400lbs but I’m an advocate for the bravest man walks away and fights another day.
‘I’m 100% sure this person knows me quite well because he just wanted my Rolex watch and knows I like them.
‘When it happened I was just distressed and upset. The knife was about 12 to 15 inches long, like a big kitchen knife, it was terrifying.
‘I’m not sure why I did, I just remember thinking “what am I prepared to lose?”
‘He kept saying he was going to stab me up and I got my watch off and in the spur of the moment I went to hand it to him and flung it onto the roof of Subway.
‘As soon as I did it, I just thought “why did I do that?”
‘But thankfully he just looked perplexed, appeared to think about it for a minute and snatched my laptop.’
The £3,500 computer, which had customers’ information on it, cannot be accessed as it was locked.
Mr Ewart added: ‘I lived to tell the tale but maybe I was stupid – I don’t know.
‘I really don’t know if I did the right thing – I would love to get my laptop back though.’
An Essex Police spokesman confirmed they are investigating the incident.
Anyone with information should call police on 101.
